The stereotype was never about the fruit.
Watermelon was domesticated in northeast Africa more than four thousand years ago. Its seeds were placed in Egyptian tombs.
It crossed the Atlantic during colonization and the transatlantic slave trade. Enslaved Africans grew it in their own garden plots.
After Emancipation, free Black farmers grew and sold watermelon as one of the first routes to independent income. The fruit stood for self sufficiency.
The racist caricature came later to mock that independence. WaterMelonin takes the fruit back.
To take the most stigmatized fruit in American history and turn it into the most sovereign brand in beverage culture.
WaterMelonin exists because the people who created the culture were never given the profits from it. We're changing that.
